BEING PART OF THE TEAM AT FLUID ENGINEERING

Walking into the FLUID ENGINEERING workshop, one almost immediately encounters Lloyd's big smile. Lloyd has been working for the company, which is based in Griffith NSW, for thirteen years and is just getting started. When asked what he likes most about his job, he answered: ‘’The challenge. I like being challenged all the time and having to think outside the box. Not everything I do is straightforward.’’ FLUID ENGINEERING specialises in offering complete turnkey solutions for water transfer needs. They do this by manufacturing the Ornel pump which has pumping capacities of five to five hundred megalitres per day. With Lloyd as their loyal Lead Fitter Machinist, they eagerly tackle every challenge.

Before FLUID ENGINEERING was established in 2011, Lloyd and its director John worked together for 24 years after they did their respective apprenticeships for the same company. A year after John left the company to work for FLOW SMART and establish FLUID ENGINEERING, he and Lloyd reconnected. ‘’When John rang me, I initially did not recognise his voice as he did not mention his name,’’ Lloyd explained. ‘’He started by asking me when I was going to call him. As soon as he started laughing, I knew it was John. It all started from there.’’

Lloyd continued: ‘’I did a little bit of CNC work at my previous place of employment, then I got out of it for about two years and then basically retrained myself and had to use a different – what we call – interface on these machines. I had to learn it all myself.’’ To the question what his daily tasks are, he answered: ‘’I make all the components of FLUID ENGINEERING’s Ornel pumps. I also assemble turbines, helping the rest of the team and do quality control.’’ It is impressive to see Lloyd working with these gigantic CNC machines, when you consider that he taught it all himself. Nowadays, he even writes the programs, G-codes, for these machines.

After the Ornel pumps leave the workshop, they get shipped to the furthest corners of Australia. Even in South Africa and New Zealand, water flows through FLUID ENGINEERING’s Ornel pumps every day. ‘’One of the coolest aspects of my job is the variety of things and the places I travel to,’’ Lloyd said. When we spoke on the Mardie Project for BCI in Western Australia, Lloyd says: ‘’Part of my job is to install and commission the work; that is why I have been to the Mardie Salt Project in Western Australia. I have also been to jobs down in Victoria and all the way up over the Queensland border – I have been everywhere.’’

We were not done talking about what Lloyd’s job makes it so cool as Lloyd continued: ‘’The clients that I have met and stay in touch with is something I enjoy a lot, but most of all the team I work with. We are all like a family and it is a great atmosphere to work in.’’

Lloyd is far from finished working for FLUID ENGINEERING as they are developing and improving their products all the time. ‘’We are refining our pumps. The products I started working with thirteen years ago are very different to those we have now. We learn from things that did not work out well and keep on improving. I am sure that the product I am sending out of the workshop will be different over the next thirteen years,’’ Lloyd said.

FLUID ENGINEERING's unstoppable drive to develop and grow was recently awarded for excellence in Micro Business at the 2023 NSW Business Awards.
